Buying a Watch on Instagram in Ghana: What to Ask Before You Pay

A great deal of watch selling in Ghana happens on Instagram and WhatsApp, and quite a lot of it is legitimate. Small dealers, personal shoppers, people with genuine access.

The difficulty is that the format hides everything you would normally use to judge a seller. A grid of photographs looks the same whether the watches behind it are real or not.

Here is what to ask before money moves.

Ask for the caseback

Not a stock photo. A photograph of the actual watch, turned over, well lit, shot straight on.

This one request filters out a surprising number of sellers, because stock images do not include casebacks and photographing a real one means owning a real one. If the answer is a delay, an excuse or a different photo, you have learned what you needed.

Ask for the reference number

Every genuine watch has one. Look it up yourself. Check that the model exists, that it looks like the photographs, and that the reference matches the caseback image they just sent you.

Ask where it came from

Not to catch them out. A straight answer, even an unglamorous one, is a good sign. Bought at retail abroad. Sourced through a trade contact. Traded in by a customer.

A seller who cannot or will not describe their own supply chain is asking you to trust something they will not describe.

Ask about the price honestly

If the price is far below what the watch costs elsewhere, ask why, and weigh the answer. Sometimes there is a real reason: a trade-in, an older model, a piece without papers. Often there is not.

A discount has a reason. An impossible price does not have a reason, it has an explanation you are not being given.

Ask what happens if it is fake

Before you pay. Get it in writing in the chat.

The answer tells you how much confidence they have in their own stock. Someone certain of what they are selling will answer this easily.

Practical protections

Pay on delivery where you can. Most serious Ghanaian sellers offer it. A seller who insists on full payment before dispatch, for a first transaction, is asking you to carry all the risk.

Meet in person for anything significant. Above a few thousand cedis, thirty minutes in a physical location is worth more than a week of messages.

Screenshot everything. The claims, the price, the promises. Chats are editable and messages disappear.

Check how long the account has existed and whether the comments look like real customers or a follower package.

And if you already bought

If you own something you are now unsure about, bring it in. We will look at it honestly whether or not you bought it from us, and tell you what we see. Sometimes the answer is good news.
