How to Choose a Signature Scent

A signature scent is the one people associate with you. Someone catches it on a stranger and thinks of you for a second.

That is worth having, and choosing one is less mysterious than it is made to sound.

Understand the three stages

Fragrance changes on skin over hours, in three phases.

Top notes. The first ten to fifteen minutes. Bright, usually citrus or herbal, and designed to make an impression at the counter.

Heart notes. Fifteen minutes to two hours. Florals, spices, fruits. This is the character of the fragrance.

Base notes. Two hours onward. Woods, amber, musk, vanilla, leather. This is what actually lingers and what people remember.

The mistake almost everyone makes is buying on the top notes. You smell it in the shop, love it, take it home, and by evening it has become something you did not choose.

How to test properly

On skin, never on paper. Paper cannot reproduce how a fragrance reacts with your skin chemistry, which changes it considerably.

One at a time. Two or three maximum in a session. After that your nose stops distinguishing.

Wait four hours before deciding. This is the rule nobody follows and the one that matters most. Spray it, leave the shop, live your afternoon, and see what it has become by evening.

We would rather you did this than bought something on the spot and regretted it.

Do not sniff coffee beans between fragrances. It is theatre. Smell your own forearm; it resets your nose better.

Choosing a direction

If you do not know where to start, work from what you already like rather than from categories.

Fresh and citrus. Clean, easy, light. Best for daytime, but in Accra's heat they need an EDP concentration or they disappear.

Woody. Cedar, sandalwood, vetiver. Warm and grounded, and generally the most versatile direction in this climate.

Amber and oriental. Vanilla, resins, spice. Rich and long-lasting. Strong in heat, so apply less.

Aromatic and fougère. Lavender, herbs, moss. The classic masculine structure.

Floral. Rose, jasmine, tuberose. In this heat, look for something with a solid base or it will not last.

The Ghana-specific advice

Buy warmer than you think. Woody and amber bases hold up in heat where fresh scents evaporate.

Buy less quantity, more concentration. An EDP used sparingly beats an EDT used heavily.

Consider having two. One lighter for daytime and work, one richer for evenings and occasions. That is not indulgence; it is the sensible response to a climate where a single fragrance rarely covers both.

When it is a gift

The rule we give everyone: buy in the direction of what they already wear, not away from it.

If she wears something warm and vanilla-led, a bright citrus will sit in the drawer regardless of how good it is. If you do not know what they wear, ask us and we will work it out from what they like generally.

Fragrance is the most personal thing we sell and the easiest to get wrong. There is no shame in asking for help with it.

Give it time

A signature scent is not usually love at first spray. It is the one you keep coming back to.

Try a few properly. The right one becomes obvious.
