How to Spot a Fake Fossil Watch

Fossil is one of the most counterfeited watch brands in West Africa, for a straightforward reason: it is popular, it is affordable enough that people do not scrutinise it, and the designs are simple enough to copy passably.

Here is what separates a real one from a copy.

The caseback

Genuine Fossil casebacks are engraved cleanly, with even depth and consistent character spacing. You will find the Fossil name, a model number beginning with letters such as FS, ME, ES or BQ, and usually a country of origin.

Counterfeits get the depth wrong. The engraving is shallow, or uneven, or the characters wander out of alignment. Read every line slowly. Spelling errors appear more often than you would expect.

The model number

Fossil model numbers follow patterns. FS for men's, ES for women's, ME for the mechanical Townsman line, BQ for certain collections.

Look the number up. It should return a real watch that looks like the one in front of you, in the same colour, with the same complications. A mismatch between the number and the watch is decisive.

The crown

On a genuine Fossil the crown pulls out with a clean, defined click at each position. There is no grinding, no wobble, no vagueness about where it has stopped.

Counterfeits use cheap stems. The crown feels loose in the case, the positions are indistinct, and setting the time feels imprecise.

The dial printing

Look closely at the text on the dial, especially the small print near six o'clock. Genuine printing is crisp with clean edges even under magnification.

Counterfeit printing bleeds slightly. Letters look thickened, edges look soft, and the alignment of the text against the markers is often very slightly off.

The strap and buckle

Fossil leather is properly finished with even stitching and a stamped buckle. Run a finger along the edge of the strap. Genuine leather edges are sealed and smooth.

Counterfeit straps are the cheapest part to make and often the first thing to give it away: thin, plasticky, with uneven stitching and a light, hollow-feeling buckle.

The weight

A real Fossil has some heft to it. The cases are solid steel and the bracelets have weight in the hand.

Counterfeits are noticeably lighter. If you have handled a genuine one, a fake feels wrong before you have looked at anything.

The chronograph pushers

On chronograph models, the pushers should actuate the subdials properly. Press the top pusher and the chronograph seconds hand should start; press again and it should stop; press the bottom and it should reset cleanly to zero.

Many counterfeits have decorative subdials that do nothing at all. This takes ten seconds to check and it is conclusive.
