Steel, Gold Tone or Ceramic: Choosing a Case Material in Accra's Climate

Case material affects how a watch looks, how heavy it feels, how it ages, and how it copes with heat and humidity. In this climate the last one matters more than people expect.

Stainless steel

The default, and for good reason.

Durable, corrosion-resistant, and it takes both a brushed and a polished finish. Scratches can be refinished by a watchmaker. It suits every context, from an office to a wedding.

In this climate: excellent. Steel does not react to sweat or humidity, and it does not discolour.

The drawback: weight. A full steel bracelet on a large watch is heavy on the wrist all day, and some people never adjust to it.

Gold tone plating

Most gold-coloured watches in this price range are steel with a thin gold-coloured coating, usually PVD or IP.

The appeal: it looks like gold at a small fraction of the price, and it photographs beautifully. Michael Kors and Guess do this particularly well.

The honest caveat: plating wears. It goes first at the clasp, the bracelet edges and the crown, where friction is highest. Sweat accelerates it, which means it wears faster here than in a cooler climate.

Expect a well-cared-for gold-tone watch to hold its finish for years, not decades. It can be replated, at a cost that is often a meaningful fraction of the watch.

Buy it for the look, knowing what it is. Do not buy it expecting it to be permanent.

Two-tone

Steel with gold-tone accents, usually on the bezel and centre bracelet links.

Practically the best of both. The gold gives warmth, and because the wear points are mostly steel, it ages better than fully plated pieces. It is also the most flattering option on darker skin, which is worth saying plainly.

Ceramic

Emporio Armani's Ceramica line is the main example in our range.

The appeal: ceramic does not scratch in normal wear, does not corrode, and does not conduct heat. It stays at skin temperature rather than getting hot in the sun, which in Accra is a genuine comfort advantage rather than a marketing point.

It is also lighter than steel and comes in white, which almost nothing else does convincingly.

The drawback: ceramic is brittle. It will not scratch, but a hard knock against tile or concrete can chip it, and a chip cannot be repaired. The part is replaced or it is not fixed.

Buy it if you want something distinctive and are not hard on your watches.

Titanium

Rare in our range but worth knowing. Lighter than steel, hypoallergenic, and it does not warm up.

Scratches more easily than steel and is harder to refinish. If you find sweat reactions to steel, titanium solves it.

The climate summary

Best in Accra: steel and ceramic. Neither cares about heat or humidity.

Manage expectations on: gold tone plating, which wears faster in this climate than the brochure suggests.

Watch out for: leather straps rather than cases. Whatever the case is made of, a leather strap will need replacing every year or two here.
