What Actually Makes a Watch Expensive

Two watches sit side by side. One costs GH₵1,800 and one costs GH₵14,000. From two metres away they look similar.

The difference is real, but it is not always where people assume.

What genuinely costs money

The movement. This is the largest single factor. A quartz module can be bought for a few dollars. A Swiss automatic movement, assembled, regulated and adjusted by a person, costs orders of magnitude more before anything else is added.

Finishing. Not whether a case is polished, but how many separate operations that polish took. Brushed surfaces meeting polished ones along a crisp line takes skilled hand-work. Look at where the case meets the lugs on an expensive watch and then on a cheap one; the transition is where the money went.

Materials. Sapphire crystal over mineral. Solid steel links over folded ones. A clasp machined from a block rather than stamped from sheet. Each is invisible in a photograph and obvious in the hand.

Assembly and testing. Higher-end watches are assembled in smaller batches, regulated individually and tested against stated tolerances. That is labour, and labour is the cost.

What costs money but is not quality

Brand. Some of what you pay is the name, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. That is not automatically dishonest; a name that has meant something for a century has real value to the person wearing it.

Marketing. Sponsorships and campaigns are recovered in the price.

Distribution. Every hand a watch passes through takes a margin.

Being clear-eyed about this is not cynicism. It just means knowing which part of the price is craft and which is position, and deciding what you want to pay for.

What does not cost much at all

Size. A larger watch does not cost meaningfully more to make.

Complications on cheap watches. Many chronograph subdials on inexpensive watches are decorative and do nothing. Press the pushers and see.

Gold-coloured plating. Costs very little. Gold-coloured is not gold.

Crystal decoration. Set crystals cost far less than the appearance suggests.

The three price steps that matter

Around GH₵1,200. You cross from unbranded to branded. Real quality control, a real warranty, a case that will not corrode. The single most important step of the three.

Around GH₵2,500. Sapphire crystals appear. Bracelets are finished rather than assembled. Mechanical movements become reachable. This is where a watch starts feeling considered rather than merely functional.

Around GH₵10,000. In-house or higher-grade movements, finishing done by hand, and designs with enough history that they will still look correct in twenty years.

Between those steps, more money buys refinement rather than transformation.

What we would actually tell you

The most useful money in watchmaking is spent between GH₵2,500 and GH₵6,000. Below it you are buying a functional object. Above it you are buying refinement, and refinement has diminishing returns.
