Understanding Fragrance Concentration: EDT, EDP and Parfum

Those letters on a fragrance bottle are the most useful information on it, and most people buying scent do not know what they mean.

They describe how much perfume oil is dissolved in the alcohol base. That single number determines how strong a fragrance is, how long it lasts and, largely, what it costs.

The scale

Eau Fraîche. 1 to 3% oil. Very light, an hour or two. Rare.

Eau de Cologne (EDC). 2 to 5%. Light and fresh, two to three hours. Traditionally citrus-led.

Eau de Toilette (EDT). 5 to 15%. The most common concentration. Three to five hours, and lighter in projection.

Eau de Parfum (EDP). 15 to 20%. Richer and longer. Five to eight hours, sometimes more.

Parfum or Extrait. 20 to 40%. The strongest. Eight hours and beyond, often detectable the next morning.

Same name, different fragrance

The important part, and the one that surprises people: an EDT and an EDP of the same fragrance are not the same scent at different strengths. They are frequently reformulated.

The EDP usually emphasises the deeper base notes. The EDT often leads with brighter top notes. You can genuinely prefer the EDT of a fragrance you already own in EDP.

So before assuming stronger is better, smell both.

Which to buy in Ghana

Heat changes everything here, and this is where most advice written for Europe stops being useful.

Heat amplifies fragrance. Warm skin projects far more than cool skin. A scent that is pleasant in an air-conditioned office can be overwhelming in a car park at two in the afternoon.

Heat also burns through the light ones. Citrus and fresh top notes evaporate faster in this climate. An EDT that lasts five hours in a temperate country may give you three here.

Which pulls in two directions, and the resolution is this:

For daytime and work: an EDP applied sparingly. Two sprays, not five. You get the longevity without the projection, because you have controlled the quantity rather than the concentration.

For evening and occasions: an EDP or Parfum, still applied conservatively.

For fresh, citrus-led scents: buy the EDP if it exists. The EDT will not survive the afternoon.

How to apply in this climate

Pulse points only. Wrists, neck, behind the ears. Warm skin drives the scent upward.

Never rub your wrists together. It crushes the top notes and shortens the whole life of the fragrance. Spray and let it dry.

Apply to moisturised skin. Dry skin holds fragrance poorly, which is why scent seems to vanish on some people. A little unscented moisturiser first makes a noticeable difference.

Two sprays, thirty minutes before you leave. Let it settle before you meet anybody.

On value

Higher concentration means more oil, so a Parfum costs more per millilitre. But you use less of it, so the cost per wearing is often lower than the shelf price suggests.

A 50ml EDP applied at two sprays will outlast a 100ml EDT applied at five.

Storage matters here

Heat and light destroy fragrance. Not the bathroom, not a windowsill, not a car.

A drawer or a cupboard, at room temperature, in the box. A well-stored bottle lasts years. A bottle on a sunny shelf turns in months.
