Graduation Gifts That Last Longer Than the Ceremony
Most graduation gifts are gone within a year. The money is spent, the flowers die, the gadget is superseded.
A small number get kept for decades, and they tend to share one quality: they mark the moment and then remain useful long after it.
Why a watch works so well here
Finishing a degree in Ghana usually coincides with something practical: the start of a professional wardrobe, national service, the first round of interviews.
A watch is often the first serious object a person owns. It gets worn to those interviews. It is on the wrist in the photographs from that year. And a decade later it is still associated with that specific moment in a way almost nothing else is.
That is the mechanism. It is not sentiment for its own sake; the watch earns the association by being present.
Buy wearable, not impressive
This is the single most useful piece of advice we can give.
A GH₵2,000 watch that gets worn every day for ten years is a far better gift than a GH₵6,000 watch that gets worn twice and lives in a drawer because it feels too serious for daily life.
Graduates are usually at the start of their earning, moving around, using public transport, working long days. Buy something they will not be anxious about.
What we would suggest: a Fossil for everyday wear, a Tissot quartz if the budget stretches and you want Swiss on the caseback, or a Citizen if they are the sort of person who will appreciate an automatic movement.
Sizing without asking
You cannot measure their wrist without giving it away. Some ways round it:
Look at a photograph of them wearing a watch and compare the case width against their wrist. Roughly two thirds is right.
Default to 40mm for men, 32mm to 34mm for women. Very few people find those sizes wrong.
Or ask us to include an exchange note. We size and exchange without argument, and knowing that takes the worry out of the decision.
Engrave it

This is what turns a good gift into a kept one, and it costs very little.
What works: a date, initials, a short line. Class of 2026. UG, 2026. Kofi, from Dad.
What does not: a full sentence. The caseback is small and cramped text reads as an afterthought.
One honest caveat: engraving is permanent and affects resale. For a keepsake that is exactly the point.
If the budget is tighter
A good fragrance is the strongest alternative, because a signature scent works the same way a watch does. It gets associated with a period of someone's life and they remember it years later.
Buy something they would not buy for themselves, and keep the presentation good. A modest gift presented properly outperforms an expensive one in a shopping bag.
Order early
Graduation season is busy and engraving needs lead time. A week's notice is comfortable. The day before is not.
