
Water Resistance Explained: What 30m, 50m and 200m Actually Mean
Water resistance ratings are the most misleading numbers in watchmaking, because they do not mean what they appear to mean.
A watch rated 30m is not safe at thirty metres underwater. It is barely safe in a shower.
Why the numbers mislead
The rating comes from a static pressure test in a laboratory. The watch is subjected to the pressure found at that depth, in still water, at a stable temperature, for a short period.
Real water is not still. Moving your arm through water briefly multiplies the pressure on the case well beyond the static figure. Warm water expands gaskets. Cold water contracts them. Soap degrades them.
So the number is a laboratory result, not a promise about your life.
What the ratings actually allow
30m (3 ATM). Splashes and rain. Not the shower. Not the pool. Wash your hands carefully.
50m (5 ATM). Hand washing, rain, a brief accidental soaking. Still not swimming.
100m (10 ATM). Swimming and snorkelling. This is the realistic minimum for a watch you do not want to think about.
200m (20 ATM). Everything most people will ever do, including diving. At this point you can stop worrying.
300m and above. Professional diving territory. Reassuring rather than necessary.
Why this matters more in Accra
Humidity is harder on watches than most people realise. Moisture works into a case through worn gaskets over time, and a watch that was fine three years ago may not be now.
Heat compounds it. Warm air holds more moisture, and daily temperature swings pump air in and out of any case that is not properly sealed.
Our practical advice: 100m minimum for a daily watch in this climate. Not because you plan to swim in it, but because the seal that keeps water out also keeps humidity out.
The screw-down crown
More important than the number. A screw-down crown threads into the case and seals it. You have to unscrew it to set the time, and screw it back afterwards.
Most watches rated 100m and above have one. If yours does, check it is screwed down before any contact with water. An unscrewed crown makes the rating meaningless.
What voids it
Pressing chronograph pushers underwater. Operating the crown while wet. Hot showers, where steam penetrates gaskets that liquid water would not. Sudden temperature changes. Age, because gaskets perish.
The maintenance nobody does
Gaskets should be replaced every few years, and at every service. A watch that has never had its seals checked is not really rated at anything, whatever the caseback says.
If your watch has been serviced, ask whether the water resistance was retested. Many services skip it unless asked.
And if water gets in
Get it to a watchmaker immediately. Do not wait to see whether it clears. Moisture inside a movement causes corrosion within days, and the damage is often worse than the cost of prevention.
