How to Spot a Fake Michael Kors Watch

Michael Kors is the most counterfeited watch brand we see in Ghana. The designs are recognisable, the price point is achievable, and the gold tones photograph well enough that a copy can look convincing on a screen.

In the hand it is a different matter.

The MK logo

This is where most counterfeits fail. On a genuine Michael Kors watch the logo is precisely rendered, correctly proportioned and perfectly centred, whether it appears on the dial, the crown or the clasp.

Counterfeits get the proportions slightly wrong. The letters are too thick, too thin, or spaced fractionally off. Compare against an image from the brand's own site and the difference becomes obvious once you are looking for it.

The model number

Every genuine piece carries a model number on the caseback, beginning MK followed by four digits. MK2425, MK5605, MK6273.

Look it up. It should return the exact watch you are holding, in the same colour and size. If the number returns a different model, or nothing at all, stop there.

The gold tone

Genuine Michael Kors gold plating is even, warm and consistent across the whole watch. The case, bracelet links and clasp all match.

Counterfeit plating is often slightly too yellow, too brassy, or inconsistent between the case and the bracelet. Look at where the bracelet meets the case in daylight.

The crystals

Many Michael Kors models use pavé crystal settings on the bezel or dial. On a genuine piece these are set evenly, seated firmly and uniform in size and cut.

On counterfeits they sit at slightly different depths, catch the light unevenly, and occasionally one is already missing or loose. Tilt the watch slowly under a light and look for anything that does not sparkle in step with the rest.

The weight and the clasp

Genuine pieces feel substantial. The clasp closes with a firm, definite snap and holds without play.

Counterfeits feel light, and the clasp often feels springy or vague. A clasp that opens under light pressure is a bad sign.

The date window

If the watch has a date, the number should be centred in the window, printed cleanly and aligned straight.

Counterfeits frequently show a date sitting slightly high, low or off-centre, with a font that does not match the brand's.

The packaging

Genuine Michael Kors watches arrive in a proper branded box with an instruction booklet and a warranty card. Printing is sharp, colours are true.

Counterfeit booklets are photocopied and lose colour and definition. That said, remember that real boxes are separated from real watches and resold constantly. Good packaging is a positive signal, not proof.

If in doubt

Bring it in and we will tell you what we see.

Water Resistance Explained: What 30m, 50m and 200m Actually Mean

A watch rated 30m is not safe at thirty metres. It is barely safe in a shower. What the ratings actually allow, and why 100m is the minimum in Accra.
